Foods I ate and loved – langos edition

Happy Tuesday you stunner you! I’m just back from a lovely long weekend in Budapest, Hungary, which we all know is famous for paprika, inspiring a catchy When Harry Met Sally one liner, and for kicking England’s ass at water polo in the 2012 Olympics. I mean, honestly, did they have to humiliate the home team like that? Seemed gratuitous to me.

Anyways, I want to talk about a lesser known Hungarian specialty – langos (pronounced ‘langosh’). These deep-fried breads topped with whatever your heart may desire are the savory donuts you’ve been missing in your savory donut-less existence.

You more savvy eaters may be all “Isn’t that just a deep fried pizza without tomato sauce?” to which I say “Maybe. But when’s the last time you had sour cream on your pizza?” And if you’re all “I got some blue cheese with my chicken wings and put it on top of my pizza Tuesday night, does that count?” then I say, “Make better life decisions.” Tuesday night?! Get a hold of yourself, (wo)man.

But back to langos…you can get them with a basic garlicky spread, a whole slew of sandwich-like toppings, or even go sweet and order with chocolate or powdered sugar (if you’re a savage), but the Hungarians seem to agree they’re meant to be consumed just one way – topped with sour cream, cheese, and a sprinkle of paprika. These are a must if you find yourself in Hungary, y’all.

Check them out – aren’t they a beaut?
